Deadly DUI Hit-and-Run Crash on Highway 54 in National City Involves 4 Cars

 
NATIONAL CITY, CA (October 7, 2023) – One person died in a DUI hit-and-run crash on Highway 54 in National City early Thursday morning on October 5.
 
The fatal crash happened shortly after 2:30 a.m. just between the highway and Mile of Cars Way. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Nissan Frontier, a Honda Accord, a Jeep Liberty and a Jeep Patriot collided along the northbound highway.
 
All of the vehicles except the Patriot were involved in an initial crash. When the Accord became disabled in the roadway, the Patriot slammed into it.
 
The driver of the Accord was ejected from the car when it was hit by the Patriot. Paramedics took her to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
 
The driver of the Patriot suffered moderate injuries.
 
Meanwhile, the driver of the Frontier ran away from the scene, leaving his truck behind.
 
At this time, the CHP is trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. Alcohol and/or drugs was a factor, but it is unknown which of the drivers was suspected of being under the influence.
