1 Person Dies in Wrong-Way Collision on 80 Freeway in Oakland

 
OAKLAND, CA (March 20, 2024) — One person died in a wrong-way accident on the 580 Freeway near the 80 Freeway connector.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly multi-car crash happened around 4:30 a.m. Monday. Although, the incident stemmed before that when El Cerrito Police tried pursuing a vehicle whose driver was tied to a burglary moments prior. At some point during the chase, El Cerrito Police terminated the pursuit. However, the suspect hopped onto the 580 and 80 Freeway junction, driving up the wrong connector ramp. Subsequently, the vehicle crashed head-on into two cars.
 
As a result of the accident, a BMW driver died, and two passengers in the suspect vehicle suffered significant injuries. In addition, the solo occupant of a white van also reported major injuries.
 
At this time, officials did not release the victim’s name. However, we will update this report once we receive more information.
