Sonora Police Officer Sustains Injuries after T-Boned by Motorist on Highway 49 near Shaws Flat Road

SONORA, CA (June 24, 2023) – Police officer Ron Watson was injured in a broadside crash in Sonora Sunday afternoon last week on June 18.

The crash happened just after 4:00 p.m. north of Shaws Flats Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, Watson was driving north on the highway and he activated his code 3 emergency response lights for about five seconds and began executing a U-turn. As he moved to the right side of the roadway in preparation for intended U-turn, a silver Toyota SUV in front of him failed to slow down or stop.

Watson then steered left to complete his U-turn and the right front of the SUV crashed into the driver’s door of Watson’s patrol vehicle.

The patrol vehicle suffered moderate damage and the SUV suffered minor damage.

Responding paramedics took Watson to Adventist Health Sonora for treatment of a minor head injury.

No one else was injured in the crash, police said. An investigation is underway.

When driving, use enhanced caution especially through an intersection. Manage your speed and follow traffic signals. Pay close attention to the road and make sure to stop at all red lights and stop signs.
