Pickup Driver Fatally Injured in MTS Trolley Accident on Sampson Street near Main Street

 
SAN DIEGO, CA (December 12, 2022) — A man died in an MTS trolley crash on Sampson Street on Friday, December 9.
 
According to San Diego Police officers, they received reports of the incident around 9:27 p.m. at the 1200 block of Sampson Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the wreckage of a 1969 GMC truck and a stopped trolley.
 
Sgt. Clint Leisz said the railroad crossing arms were down. Yet, the pickup driver still steered into the opposite lane. He tried to bypass them and he drove straight into the path of the trolley.
 
The trolley struck the right side of the pickup truck. As a result, the vehicle then hit a pole.
 
Leisz said the driver of the pickup died at the scene. The identity of the victim was not immediately available.
 
The passengers on the trolley did not sustain any injuries.
