Police Arrest DUI Suspect after Fatally Striking Pedestrian in North Highlands

 
NORTH HIGHLANDS, CA (March 15, 2023) – A pedestrian was killed and police arrested Ilya Shamailov after a DUI crash in North Highlands late Monday evening on March 13.
 
The fatal crash happened around 11:00 p.m. on Elkhorn Boulevard at Butterball Way. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 32-year-old suspect from Brooklyn, New York, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette east on Elkhorn at a high rate of speed. He had a female passenger with him in the car. Her name, age and city of residence were not available.
 
Shamailov was unable to stop or slow his car before the Corvette struck the pedestrian who was crossing the street.
 
As a result, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s name and age once family is notified.
 
The female passenger in the Corvette suffered major life-threatening injuries.
 
Shamailov had minor injuries in the crash. Police later booked him into the Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of DUI.
 
Further investigation is underway.
