Officer Darrell Cunningham Among Two Killed in DUI Crash on Lindley Avenue [Northridge, CA]

LAPD Officer and Passenger Die after Crash with Suspected Drunk Driver in Northridge

 
NORTHRIDGE, CA (November 5, 2023) – An off-duty Los Angeles police officer Darrell Cunningham was among two people who died in a DUI crash in Northridge early Saturday morning on November 4.
 
The fatal crash happened around 1:20 a.m. at the intersection of Lindley Avenue and Roscoe Boulevard. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, 20-year-old Brian David Oliveri was driving a black BMW at approximately 100 mph and ran a red light. He then struck a white Infiniti, driven by Cunningham.
 
Responding firefighters located the BMW lodged against an apartment building, the Infiniti mangled on the street and a sheared fire hydrant.
 
Paramedics pronounced Cunningham and his female passenger dead at the scene.
 
A back-seat passenger, an off-duty San Bernardino deputy sheriff, suffered a broken hip and other injuries.

Oliveri was unconscious and in critical condition. His female passenger was able to get out from the wreckage on her own and sustained serious injuries.

Cunningham is survived by his fiancé, his 6- and 3-year-old boys, his mother, and two other brothers.

Police said Oliveri had been driving under the influence of alcohol. He will be booked for gross vehicular manslaughter and additional charges as further evidence is gathered.
