2 Killed, Multi-Car Crash on 5 Freeway in Bakersfield

 
BAKERSFIELD, CA (January 8, 2024) — Two people died in a 35-vehicle pileup on the 5 Freeway near Millux Road on Saturday morning.
 
According to Kern County Fire officials, the fatal multi-vehicle crash happened around 7:30 a.m. Under foggy weather conditions, 17 passenger vehicles and 18 big rigs crashed, west of Bakersfield. Subsequently, Kern County Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene to tend to the injured. Upon arriving, they found that visibility was down to 10 feet upon their arrival.
 
Tragically, two people passed away in the collision. In addition, paramedics treated nine patients with minor injuries.
 
As a result of the accident, officers closed the southbound 5 Freeway to clean up and investigate the details.
 
At the time of the report, traffic investigators did not specify the main cause of the crash, but the weather might have factored into the accident. If anyone has information, please call the California Highway Patrol.
