Officers Arrest 19-Year-Old Driver after Pursuit Crash on Via Cantebria in Encinitas

ENCINITAS, CA (April 26, 2022) – Nine people suffered injuries in a high-speed pursuit on Via Cantebria at Encinitas Boulevard on Sunday evening.

CHP officers patrolled northbound 5 Freeway at Manchester Avenue at 8:22 a.m., when they saw a grey Nissan Sentra moving erratically at a high rate of speed. The officers tried to make a traffic stop but the Nissan failed to yield and a pursuit began.

The car continued until it exited at Encinitas Boulevard. It then traveled eastbound for a little more than a mile and approached Via Cantebria.

As it entered the intersection, it ran a red light and made an illegal left turn toward northbound Via Cantebria. At the same time, two vehicles traveling westbound on Encinitas entered the intersection.

The 19-year-old male driver of the Nissan from Thermal collided with a Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 25-year-old Carlsbad woman, and a Chevrolet Traverse driven by a 32-year-old Encinitas woman with her two sons, a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old, inside.

As a result, the Nissan driver and his two passengers suffered major injuries. Seven others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

CHP officers later arrested the Nissan driver.

The California Highway Patrol asked anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them at 760-643-3400.

During a traffic stop, immediately pull over. Do not attempt to flee the scene. It can only lead to dangerous accidents. Always choose to be a responsible driver.
