Driver Sustained Injuries in Fiery Crash on Highway 101 near Jonata Park Road

BUELLTON, CA (August 10, 2021) — A truck driver was hurt in a fiery accident on Highway 101 at around 2:40 p.m. on Friday, August 6.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 63-year-old Port Hueneme man drove a 2012 Kenworth flatbed southbound on the highway at an unknown speed. Then the front of his truck hit the back of a 2017 Freightliner rig being driven by 31-year-old Paul Michael Davis, of Alta Loma.

The impact, just south of Jonata Park Road, sent the Kenworth off the west side of the highway. Then it caught fire.

Officials extricated the Kenworth driver from the cab before it became fully engulfed in flames. He suffered serious injuries and medics rushed him to Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria. Davis did not sustain any injuries, CHP said.

Meanwhile, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department quickly put out the fire that had spread to an area of grass about 50 feet square.

Authorities closed the right lane of the highway until they extinguished the flames.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
