Driver Dies after Crashing Car into Walgreens in Sunnyvale

 
SUNNYVALE, CA (June 28, 2023) – A man was killed in a fiery accident at South Sunnyvale Avenue and Old San Francisco Road early Sunday morning.
 
The fatal crash happened around 2:25 a.m. on June 25, just off El Camino Real. According to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, a vehicle collided into Walgreens and burst into flames.
 
When officers arrived, they found the driver unresponsive and trapped inside the vehicle. They extricated him and pronounced him dead at the scene.
 
Officers also found two injured passengers nearby. They learned that a good Samaritan had pulled both passengers out of the burning vehicle before first responders arrived.
 
The driver’s name has not been publicly released by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin.
 
Both surviving passengers cooperated with authorities.
 
The Walgreens store did not catch fire, but the heat from the vehicle fire did melt the awning attached to the store.
 
Speed and alcohol are believed to have played a role in the crash, which is under investigation. Authorities urged witnesses to contact DPS Investigator Longanecker at 408-730-7109.
