Julio Vasquez Dies after Head-On Crash with Commercial Truck on Highway 129 in Aromas

 
AROMAS, CA (October 6, 2021) – Julio Ramirez Vasquez was killed in a head-on accident on Highway 129 near Aromas on Friday afternoon.
 
The fatal accident happened around 4:30 p.m. on October 1 just west of Old Chittenden Road. A 50-year-old Salinas man was driving a 2021 Freightliner M2 eastbound on the highway. At the same time, a 30-year-old Firebaugh man was driving a Dodge Durango ahead of the Freightliner.
 
When the Dodge began slowing for traffic, the Freightliner collided into its rear. The impact caused the Dodge’s driver to veer and struck a cement wall just east of the train trestle. He sustained minor injuries from that crash.
 
After striking the Dodge, the Freightliner veered into the westbound lane and struck head-on with the oncoming a 2018 Mitsubishi Fuso box truck, driven by Vasquez.
 
First responders rushed Vasquez to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. He was a 44-year-old Prunedale man, according to the Monterey County Sheriff Coroner’s Office.
 
The Freightliner’s driver suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Natividad Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
 
CHP investigators are still looking into this fatal crash.
