DUI Rollover Crash on Westside Boulevard in Merced County Kills Passenger and Critically Injures Driver

 
MERCED COUNTY, CA (October 6, 2021) – A passenger died in a DUI rollover crash at Westside Boulevard and Sultana Drive in Merced County on Tuesday, October 5.
 
The crash happened around 4:00 a.m. just south of Livingston near Atwater. According to the California Highway Patrol, an 18-year-old Merced man was driving a 1997 Ford Explorer westbound on Westside Boulevard at a high rate of speed. He then veered to the right onto the north dirt shoulder.
 
The vehicle overturned multiple times and struck several almond trees in a nearby orchard. The teen driver and his 19-year-old male passenger from Atwater were thrown onto the roadway. Both were not wearing their seat belts.
 
When first responders arrived, the passenger already died at the scene.
 
An air ambulance took the driver to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries and was in critical condition.
 
Authorities said alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
