Joshua Schaefer Dead, Woman Hurt after Multi-Car Train Collision on East Cypress Road and Main Street

 
OAKLEY, CA (August 26, 2021) — A crash between multiple vehicles and a train killed a 12-year-old Joshua Schaefer on Wednesday, August 25.
 
At around 12:53 p.m., Battalion chief Steve Aubert said they received reports of a collision involving a freight train and three vehicles. East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters responded at a railroad crossing at East Cypress Road and Main Street.
 
According to Oakley police, who also responded to the scene, one vehicle rolled over. They added at least one victim suffered from head trauma and was in and out of consciousness.
 
After firefighters arrived, the 12-year-old died at the scene. The boy’s mother, Melissa Schaefer, identified him as Joshua Schaefer.
 
Medics airlifted a 19-year-old woman to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek in critical condition.
 
Schaefer’s family said the 19-year-old is his half-sister who had just picked him up from school.
 
The occupants of the other vehicles involved in the crash did not sustain any injuries.
