James Scott, Trevor Callis Rescued after Car Crashes Down Embankment on Highway 299

REDDING, CA (April 18, 2024) – Two men sustained injuries after a car accident on Highway 299, Thursday evening.

According to the California Highway Patrol Trinity River, the incident happened on April 11. For reasons still under investigation, a Subaru left the roadway near Pony Creek Road.

Then, the vehicle overturned multiple times down a steep embankment. The vehicle stopped partially submerged in the Trinity River.

The driver, identified as 53-year-old James Scott of Salyer, and his passenger, 20-year-old Trevor Callis of Weaverville, sustained major injuries.

As per reports, the accident happened out of view from passing motorists. So, Scott lit the Subaru on fire to keep them warm and to alert passersby.

On Friday evening, at least 18 hours after the accident, a passerby finally saw the fire and immediately called 911. Emergency responders transported Scott and Callis to St. Joseph Hospital-Eureka.

CHP continues to investigate the cause of the accident.
