Head-On Accident on Highway 33 in Fresno Kills 9 People Including 7 Children

FRESNO, CA (February 3, 2021) – Authorities identified the people who died in a head-on accident on Highway 33 just south of Sutter Avenue, January 1.

According to the CHP, 28-year-old Daniel Luna of Avenal was driving a 2013 Dodge on Highway 33 when he veered onto the west dirt shoulder of the highway. He failed to maintain control of the vehicle and traveled back across the southbound lane. Around 8:00 p.m., he then collided head-on with a Ford pickup truck.

Luna died upon impact.

The truck caught fire with eight people still inside. The children, who were between 6 and 15 years old, were members of two related families traveling in the Ford F-150 truck.

Officers believe not everyone was buckled up since the truck only had six seatbelts.

The family of those killed in the pickup truck on Monday released a picture of the victims and a statement, naming them:

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our beloved family members. Gaby, Brooke, Giada, Jonah, Mia, Daniella, Camila, and Anthony will always remain an integral part of our lives.”

Those wishing to donate to the surviving family can do so through their GoFundMe.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the loved ones of Daniel Luna and the other victims.
