Fatal Bicycle Crash on Highway 74 near Briggs Road

MENIFEE, CA (February 3, 2021) – A man who died in a bicycle accident late Saturday, January 16 in Menifee has been identified.

The accident happened around 10:45 p.m. on Highway 74, just west of Briggs Road.

Police said 43-year-old Alex Herrera of Lake Elsinore was riding his bicycle westbound on Highway 74 and was crossing into the roadway when a white truck hit him.

The impact of the collision threw Herrera into the eastbound lanes of the highway. Moments later, another vehicle also struck him.

Herrera died at the scene, according to the Riverside County coroner’s office.

The driver of the white truck remained at the location and cooperated with authorities. The driver of the second vehicle left his license plate number at the scene before taking off, police said.

Officers quickly determined the license plate belonged to a vehicle registered to a driver and home in Hemet. Menifee police responded to that residence and detained the second driver.

Further investigation revealed the second driver may not have known he struck the cyclist.

No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

Police asked witnesses to contact the Menifee Police Department at (951) 723-1500.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alex Herrera.
