Man on Bicycle Suffers Critical Injuries after Crash with Metro Train on Spring Street in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA (January 4, 2023) – A man on a bicycle suffered critical injuries after a train crash Saturday morning on December 31.

The crash happened around 11:15 a.m. at the intersection of Spring Street and Del Mar Avenue. According to the Long Beach Police Department, the bicyclist rode westbound on Spring Street around lowered railroad crossing arms near the tracks when the Metro train struck him.

Paramedics rushed the bicyclist to a hospital in critical condition.

There were no reports of injuries to any passengers or crew members aboard the train.

The accident is still under investigation.

Train tracks and railroad crossings are a major safety concern. Only cross at designated railroad crossings marked by a sign, lights, or a gate. Never rush across as trains may be closer and faster than you think. Patiently wait for the trains to pass, the lights to stop flashing, and the gates to lift before crossing.
