Pedestrian Andrew Lopez Dies in Winchester Hit-and-Run on Winchester Road

 
WINCHESTER, CA (May 9, 2022) — One person died in a pedestrian accident on Winchester Road near Scott Road on April 30.
 
Police identified the victim as 41-year-old Menifee resident Andrew Lopez, according to the California Highway Patrol.
 
According to the Riverside County Fire Department, the fatal accident happened around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. The driver of an SUV traveled on Winchester Road – also known as Highway 79 – south of Scott Road. At the same time, Lopez talked in the northbound traffic lane.
 
A 71-year-old Temecula man at the wheel of a 2016 Toyota Rav4 was going north and struck the victim without stopping.
 
Witnesses found Lopez in the roadway and called 911. However, CHP officers and paramedics pronounced Lopez dead at the scene.
 
Officers located vehicle parts at the scene and used additional leads to locate the Toyota at a property in Hemet.
 
While the driver showed no signs of impairment, they are facing felony hit-and-run charges. However, the man, whose identity was not disclosed, was not taken into custody.
 
Police are investigating the accident at this time.
