Wrong-Way Accident on 101 Freeway in Encino Kills Aimee Garcia, Injures 4 Children

 
ENCINO, CA (August 16, 2021) – One person died and five others sustained injuries in a wrong-way accident on 101 Freeway Thursday, August 12.
 
Police identified 26-years-old Aimee Garcia, according to the coroner’s office. Her city of residence is not available.
 
The accident happened around 7:10 p.m. on the Ventura (101) Freeway near 405 Freeway. According to the California Highway Patrol, 31-year-old Los Angeles resident Cesar Iban Torres drove the 2003 Lincoln SUV westbound in eastbound lanes. Garcia was in the front passenger seat with four juveniles in the vehicle ages 2, 5, 12 and 13.
 
Torres crashed head-on into a 2016 Kenworth big rig on 101 Freeway west of Haskell Avenue.
 
Garcia died at the scene.
 
Paramedics transported the children to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, officers said.
 
Torres tried to run away from the crash scene. Officers made contact with Torres, where he became combative and a use of force occurred while taking Torres into custody.
 
Officials treated Torres at a hospital for injuries. After that, police booked him on suspicion of murder and resisting arrest. He is held on $1 million bail. At this time, he remains in the Inmate Reception Center.
 
The truck driver, 56-year-old Jose Garcia Lopez of San Diego, complained of pain and treated at the scene.
