79-year-old David Barnes Charged, Juan Chavez Hospitalized in DUI Car Crash on Highway 1 near Branciforte Avenue

 
SANTA CRUZ, CA (August 21, 2023) — David Barnes faces DUI charges in a car accident on Highway 1 near Branciforte Avenue.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the two-car crash happened Wednesday. For DUI-related reasons, 79-year-old David Warren Barnes, of Aptos, lost control of his northbound 1996 Acura Integra. Subsequently, the Acura crashed into a northbound white 2015 Toyota Corolla, driven by 43-year-old Juan Muniga Chavez, of Palo Alto.
 
Upon impact, both vehicles plowed into a nearby guardrail, causing both cars to overturn.
 
Barnes was reportedly ejected from his vehicle and suffered major injuries. Meanwhile, Chavez reported minor injuries.
 
Minutes later, paramedics arrived and took both patients to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment. Since DUI played a role, officers arrested Barnes on felony DUI.
