Police Arrest Irving Rodriguez-Barraza for DUI after Buttonwillow Crash, 1-Year-Old Dies
BUTTONWILLOW, CA (July 27, 2022) – A 1-year-old girl died and police arrested Irving Rodriguez-Barraza after a DUI crash in the Buttonwillow area on Saturday afternoon.
The fatal crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. on July 23. According to the CHP, the 22-year-old suspect from Wasco was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram pickup truck east on Burbank Street, approaching Shafter Avenue. He was with his passenger, 48-year-old Cruz Carrillo Olvera.
Rodriguez-Barraza ran a stop sign and crashed into the left side of a 2017 Jeep Cherokee, driven by 29-year-old Jesus Tejada Sanchez of Bakersfield.
The Jeep was carrying three other people, 34-year-old Joanne Figueroa and two children ages 6 and 1. It was heading north on Shafter approaching Burbank.
The impact of the crash pushed the Jeep into an almond orchard. It then hit two power poles and an almond tree before overturning on its left side. The Dodge hit a stop sign.
All six people involved in the crash were taken to Kern Medical for treatment of major or moderate injuries.
Sadly, the 1-year-old girl died at the hospital.
Police later arrested Rodriguez-Barraza on suspicion of DUI.
All adults were wearing seat belts and both children were in car seats.
The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
