Police Arrest Carlos Acosta after Fatally Striking Bicyclist Glen Hysom in Hemet

HEMET, CA (February 23, 2022) – A bicyclist was fatally struck by hit-and-run driver Carlos Arturo Acosta after an accident just west of Hemet on Thursday, February 10.

The Riverside County coroner’s office identified the victim as 62-year-old Hemet resident Glen Hysom.

The crash happened just before 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of California Avenue and Stetson Avenue. CHP officials said 38-year-old suspect Acosta from Homeland drove a 2008 GMC Acadia when he allegedly hit into the bicyclist, identified as Hysom.

The impact shattered the victim’s bike and ejected him a short distance from the crash site.

Riverside County Fire Department paramedics pronounced Hysom dead at the scene.

CHP officers tracked the GMC northbound at a rural ranch and arrested Acosta. Soon after, they booked him into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing death, as well as driving on a suspended license. Acosta is held on $75,000 bail.

In addition, jail records show that he has an unresolved misdemeanor driving under the influence case out of San Bernardino County.

An investigation into this fatality is ongoing.

We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Glen Hysom.
