DUI Driver Crashes into Fire Truck on Tavern Road Injuring Sheriff’s Deputy

ALPINE, CA (February 23, 2022) – A sheriff’s deputy was injured in a DUI accident on Tavern Road in Alpine on Monday morning.

The accident happened just after 7:00 a.m. on February 21 at a Chevron gas station. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, units responded to a call about a possible DUI driver asleep behind the wheel of a pickup parked at the station.

Authorities confronted the 32-year-old driver from National City and immediately recognized a drug paraphernalia in plain sight of the vehicle.

When they asked the man to step out the vehicle, the man accelerated backwards with the door open and crashed into a fire truck. The pickup’s open door struck the deputy and knocked him to the ground.

Paramedics took the deputy to a hospital with a minor abrasion to the nose and some pain to the shoulder.

Meanwhile, authorities arrested the suspect for DUI charges.

At this time, an investigation is ongoing.

When reversing out of driveways, pay attention to your surroundings. Also, never get behind the wheel when you are impaired. Drugged driving puts you and others at serious risk. Be a responsible driver. Only get behind the wheel when you are alert and sober.
