VENICE, CA (June 8, 2021) – Police arrested a man Saturday night for driving an electric scooter under the influence after a collision that killed a man Saturday, May 29.

Investigators said the rider and a female passenger doubled up on the one-person scooter. California law requires electric scooters be ridden by one person only and not on sidewalks.

Soon after, the pair crashed into a man walking on the sidewalk at about 9:20 p.m. near Marco Court and Lincoln Boulevard. The LAPD identified the rider as 29-year-old James Cody Skene.

The impact caused the pedestrian to hit his head on the sidewalk. He died at the scene. After that, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office identified him as 91-year-old Yin Wu.

Skene and the female passenger ejected from the scooter due to the collision, authorities said. They suffered minor injuries. Police arrested him for suspicion of driving under the influence. Police initially held Skene on $100,000 bail, but has since been released after posting bond
