SAN BERNARDINO, CA (February 20, 2023) — A wrong-way DUI driver traveling on the 215 Freeway near Kendall Drive was arrested by police officers early Friday.

According to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Robert Bernardino, the incident happened around 2:00 a.m. For DUI reasons, a Nissan Altima driver entered the 215 Freeway southbound lanes in a northbound direction. The Nissan Altima was reportedly traveling in the wrong direction for about five minutes before officers performed a traffic break to protect drivers from the wrong-way vehicle. However, the driver switched directions and began heading southbound in the northbound lanes.

With urgency, officers reacted and slammed into the wrong-way car, which came to a rest along an embankment. Subsequently, the driver fled on foot but was quickly detained by officers.

It’s unclear whether the officers who struck the car, identified as Officer Perez and Officer Severin, reported any injuries. However, law enforcement did save lives.

No other information surrounding this incident was available. However, if witnesses have further details, please call the CHP.

When under the influence of alcohol and drugs, drivers may be confused. Many will enter freeways in the wrong direction while others may cause a car or pedestrian accident. Avoid being under the influence when driving. Instead, call a taxi or Rideshare driver to take you home.
