Wrong-Way Crash on 8 Freeway in Imperial County Kills 3 Including 28-Year-Old Man

 
IMPERIAL COUNTY, CA (February 25, 2023) – Three people were killed in a wrong-way accident on 8 Freeway in Imperial County Monday evening on February 20.
 
The fatal accident happened around 7:30 p.m. near Forrester Road, just east of El Centro. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Tesla was traveling the wrong way when it collided head-on with an Acura, driven by a 28-year-old Coachella man. The impact caused the Tesla to become fully engulfed in flames.
 
Police confirmed that the two occupants of the Tesla and the driver of the Acura died upon impact.
 
The identities of the victims have not yet been released by the Imperial County Coroner’s Office.
 
It is unknown whether the victims were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash or if drugs and/or alcohol played a factor. Further investigation is underway.
