Highway Worker Suffers Major Injuries after Struck by Stolen Vehicle Suspect During Police Chase on 80 Freeway near Alamo Drive

 
VACAVILLE, CA (April 29, 2023) – A road worker was seriously injured after an armed suspect of a stolen vehicle struck him during a police chase on 80 Freeway in Vacaville on Tuesday morning.
 
Shortly before 10:30 a.m. on April 25, Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies were chasing the driver in a stolen white Acura on eastbound 80 Freeway. Deputies gave up on the pursuit because the Acura was driving recklessly.
 
The Acura went into an active construction zone on 80 Freeway near Alamo Drive when it hit a truck and highway worker contracted with Caltrans.
 
After the crash, the driver fled the scene on foot. The Solano County deputies with the help of CHP aircraft later caught him. The man, 29-year-old Damani Mathews Jr. of Oakland, was sent to a hospital with minor injuries. He will be booked into jail on multiple felony charges after he is medically cleared.
 
The worker suffered major injuries and remains hospitalized.
 
An investigation into this crash is ongoing.
