Fiery Crash Involving Pickup Truck and Jack-Knifed Big Rig on Highway 138 near Phelan Kills 1 Driver
PHELAN, CA (August 2, 2021) – One person was killed in a fiery accident on Highway 138 in Phelan early Sunday morning.
The accident happened on August 1, near Rastall Road north of the Cajon Pass. According to the CHP, the crash involved a jack-knifed big rig and a pickup truck. The impact of the crash caused the pickup to burst into flames.
As California Highway Patrol units were responding, the big rig driver got out of his vehicle and started wandering around the highway, according to the CHP. The big rig, which toppled over onto the highway, also then started to catch fire.
When the units arrived, they found the body of the pickup driver inside the burning vehicle. The San Bernardino County coroner’s pronounced the driver dead at the scene. They will release the victim’s identify after notifying the next of kin.
The large drilling rig, which is knitted with knives, closed the highway for several hours. Around 8:00 a.m., the highway was reopened.
An investigation into this fatal crash is underway.
