Michael Mammone Dies, Vanroy Smith Detained in Bicycle Crash, Stabbing at Pacific Coast Highway and Crown Valley Parkway
DANA POINT, CA (February 3, 2023)— Michael Mammone died in a bicycle attack where he was assaulted, as well, at Pacific Coast Highway and Crown Valley Parkway.
According to authorities, the incident happened around 3:00 p.m. Wednesday. For unknown reasons, a driver of a white Lexus appeared to have deliberately struck a northbound bicyclist at the intersection. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department said the bicyclist was riding in the bike lane and had stopped at the red traffic light when he was hit from behind. Subsequently, the driver exited the vehicle and began stabbing the cyclist before bystanders held him back from attacking the victim further.
On Thursday, officials identified the bicyclist as 58-year-old Michael John Mammone who died at a hospital shortly after. Reports said that he was an ER doctor at Providence Mission Hospital Laguna Beach since 2011. In addition, officials identified the Lexus driver as 39-year-old Vanroy Evan Smith.
It’s unclear what drove Smith to hit and attack Mammone. However, an investigation into the details should confirm the motive.
Currently, officers have Smith booked into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of murder.
