Driver Dies after Rear-End Crash with Flatbed Semi on Abbott Street in Salinas

 
SALINAS, CA (May 6, 2024)– A man was killed in a rear-end accident on Abbott Street in Salinas Saturday morning on May 4.
 
The fatal accident happened just north of Highway 101. According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was driving a 2012 Volkswagen southbound on Abbott Street. For unknown reasons, he did not make the turn and drove off the west road edge at an unknown speed.
 
The car then drove onto the dirt shoulder and struck the rear of a parked flatbed semi-trailer.
 
As a result, the man driving the car suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was a 51-year-old Escondido resident. His name will be released on a later time.
 
It was unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
