Deadly Rear-End Accident on 580 Freeway in Oakland Involves Sedan and SUV

OAKLAND, CA (November 13, 2021) – A 19-year-old man was killed in a rear-end accident on 580 Freeway in Oakland Saturday morning.
 
The fatal accident happened around 6:45 a.m. on November 13, near 14th Street. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Scion sedan was traveling westbound on the freeway over the posted speed limit when it collided with the rear of a Ford Escape SUV near 14th Street. The Scion then spun out and crashed into the freeway abutment.
 
The Scion driver, who was alone in the car, suffered fatal injuries. His identity was withheld pending confirmation and notification of next of kin.
 
It was not immediately clear how many people were in the SUV, but no one else was injured in the crash.
 
Crews closed all westbound lanes of the freeway until around 7:10 a.m. while they cleared the wreckage.
 
It is unclear at this time if alcohol or drugs played a factor. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
