Man Killed, Martin Barajas Injured in Two-Vehicle Accident on 5 Freeway [Patterson, CA]

Two-Vehicle Accident on 5 Freeway in Patterson Kills 1 Driver and Badly Injures Another

 
PATTERSON, CA (October 26, 2021) – A man died and Martin Diaz Barajas Jr. suffered serious injuries in a two-vehicle accident north of Patterson Saturday evening.
 
The accident happened around 9:43 p.m. on October 23, on southbound 5 Freeway at Howard Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 54-year-old Gilroy man was driving a 1983 Jeep southbound.
 
Barajas, a 30-year-old Sacramento man, was driving a 2018 Ford approaching the Jeep from behind. He allowed the right front of his vehicle to hit the left rear of the Jeep.
 
The impact of the collision caused the Jeep to go onto the west shoulder, where it overturned.
 
Barajas lost control of his vehicle as it entered the center divider, where it also overturned several times before hitting a high-tension cable barrier and coming to a stop.
 
The 54-year-old man was thrown from the Jeep and died at the scene.
 
An air ambulance took Barajas to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto with major injuries.
 
Speed appears to have contributed to the crash, but alcohol and drugs do not. An investigation is ongoing.
