Driver Dies after Colliding Head-On with School Bus on Mussey Grade Road in Ramona

RAMONA, CA (March 29, 2023) – A man was killed in a head-on accident on Mussey Grade Road in Ramona Friday afternoon on March 24.

The fatal accident happened shortly after 4:00 p.m. near Forster Truck Trail. According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was driving a Chevrolet 2500 southbound on Mussey Grade. At the same time, a Ramona Unified School District bus carrying two children was headed northbound.

While taking a left-hand curve, the 56-year-old pickup truck driver lost control of his vehicle and entered the northbound lane, CHP said. The pickup truck drove into the path of the oncoming school bus, resulting in a head-on crash.

The pickup truck went partially up a small dirt embankment before going back eastbound across both lanes of Mussey Grade Road. It then came to a stop, trapping the driver inside.

Responding paramedics airlifted the driver to Palomar Hospital in Escondido, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The 48-year-old bus driver was also taken to Palomar Hospital with minor injuries. The two children inside the bus were unharmed.

It is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
