Former KTVU News Director Fred Zehnder Fatally Struck by Drunk Driver in Alameda
ALAMEDA, CA (June 30, 2021) – Former KTVU news director Fred Zehnder died in a DUI accident Sunday evening in Alameda.
The accident happened around 10:00 on June 27, at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Walnut Street. According to the Alameda Police Department, Zehnder was walking in a crosswalk when a Ford F150 truck hit him.
As a result, the 87-year-old victim died at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle, 30-year-old Michael Williams Alexander of Hayward, stayed on scene. Police took him into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. They booked him into Santa Rita Jail with bail set at $250,000.
Zehnder was a native of Lakeport and graduate of Humboldt State University. He worked for 21 years at KTVU until his retirement in 1999.
After leaving KTVU, Zehnder stayed attached to local journalism as the founder of the San Leandro Times and owner of the Castro Valley Forum.
