SUV Overturns on 5 Freeway in San Diego Killing the Driver and Passenger

 
SAN DIEGO, CA (November 20, 2023) – Esmeralda Medina Villa and Joshua Ziolkowski were killed in a rollover accident in San Diego early Saturday morning on November 11.
 
The fatal accident happened shortly before 3:00 a.m. on 5 Freeway, just north of E Street near the mouth of the Sweetwater River. According to the CHP, Villa was driving a 2006 BMW SUV with Ziolkowski as her passenger. For unknown reasons, the SUV went up an embankment and hit a utility pole. It then overturned, rolling back down the slope and coming to rest on the freeway.
 
Both Villa and Ziolkowski were ejected from the car. They died at the scene. Villa was a 27-year-old Chula Vista resident and Ziolkowski was 22 years old from San Diego, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
 
Prior to the arrival of police and paramedics, the driver of a northbound Ford Mustang came upon the accident and crashed into the disabled SUV.
 
A short time later, emergency crews found Villa pinned beneath the Mustang.
 
The cause of the crash and factors involved remain under investigation.
