2 Die in Thousand Oaks Rollover Accident on Highway 101

THOUSAND OAKS, CA (March 4, 2021) — Two people were killed in a rollover accident on Highway 101 near Rancho Conejo Boulevard Thursday, February 4.

25-year-old Adrian Sapien was a Ventura resident, according to the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office. 24-year-old Breann Hayes from Oxnard also died in the accident.

Both Sapien and Hayes died at the scene of the three-vehicle crash. They were seat-belted passengers in a 2008 Kia Sorent.

58-year-old Gina Garcia of Ventura, the driver of the Kia, suffered major injuries. However, she was arrested by the CHP on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs while causing injury to another and vehicular manslaughter.

The fatal crash happened around 12:10 p.m. on the northbound Highway 101. Police responded just north of the junction with Rancho Conejo Boulevard and Borchard Road.

Garcia had been traveling in the middle lane and allowed the Kia to drift into the fast lane, officials said, where it struck a Chevrolet SUV, causing both vehicles to lose control. The Kia veered back to the slow lane and hit a Toyota sedan. The drivers of the other vehicles, who wore seatbelts, were not injured.

The Kia left the roadway, hit a tree and overturned, landing on its roof in heavy brush off the side of the freeway. Officials transported Garcia in an ambulance to Los Robles Regional Hospital. However, police did not immediately arrest or take her into custody due to her injuries.

During this time, the rollover crash on Highway 101 remains under investigation. Although, anyone with news on this case should contact the CHP.

We would like to extend our condolences to the families and friends of Breann Hayes and Adrian Sapien.
