71-Year-Old Karen Cartagena Arrested, Child Killed in Pedestrian Crash at King Street and 4th Street

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (August 17, 2023) Karen Cartagena faces charges following Tuesday’s fatal pedestrian accident at King Street and 4th Street.

According to San Francisco Police officers, the deadly pedestrian accident happened around 5:15 p.m. For reasons that require further investigation, 71-year-old Karen Cartagena failed to yield to a family walking across a marked pedestrian crossing. Subsequently, Cartagena’s gray Mercedes SUV struck a 4-year-old in a stroller and her father.

Soon after, paramedics responded to the chaotic scene — crowded with buses, stopped cars and pedestrians — rushing the father and daughter to a hospital. However, despite life-saving efforts, the little girl passed away. At this time, her father remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Following the accident, Cartagena stayed for the investigation, which proved that neither alcohol nor drugs contributed to the cause.

At this time, officers are investigating the details and gathering witnesses’ testimonies. According to one witness, the family, who were from out of town, had seconds left on the crosswalk timer. However, why Cartagena did not yield demands answers.
