Police Arrest Mother for Aiding Son’s Escape after DUI Crash near Cedar and Tulare Avenues Injuring 11 Students

 
FRESNO, CA (September 11, 2023) – Eleven teens were injured in a DUI hit-and-run crash near Cedar Avenue and Tulare Avenue in Fresno Wednesday afternoon on September 6.
 
The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. at a bus stop outside of Roosevelt High School. According to the Fresno Police Department, the 16-year-old suspect was with his 14-year-old sister and his 36-year-old mother, Yesenia Renteria. He was driving a black pickup at a high rate speed when he lost control and crashed into the 20 students who were waiting at the bus stop.

After the crash, the suspect ran away with his sister. A family member picked them up and left the area.

Responding paramedics took 11 high school students to hospitals with unspecified injuries.

Meanwhile, officers were able to pull the car over and take the suspect into custody for felony hit-and-run and DUI charges. They also took the mother into custody for felony accessory after the fact.

Police said the DUI charges stem from the suspect having marijuana in his system.
