Merced County Rollover Accident Ejects, Kills Genaro Mendiola

MERCED COUNTY, CA (October 18, 2021) – A driver died in a rollover accident on Highway 99 early Sunday morning, October 10.

The Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 21-year-old Genaro Uvalle Mendiola of Ceres.

The accident happened around 1:25 a.m. on Highway 99 just north of Shanks Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, Mendiola was driving a 2012 Dodge Ram southbound on Highway 99 when the vehicle entered the median and collided with a “k-rail” bordering the traffic lanes.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the highway. Officers located the Dodge which had overturned, in the median on its wheels.

Authorities said Mendiola was then struck by four other vehicles traveling in the northbound lanes. All drivers stopped and called 911.

When officers arrived on scene they located Mendiola lying in the No. 1 northbound lane. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is unclear at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor. Further investigation is underway.

We express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Genaro Mendiola.
