Yannira Rodriguez Dies, James Cox Hurt in DUI, Wrong-Way Crash on 15 Freeway near Aero Drive

 
SERRA MESA, CA (August 31, 2023) Yannira Rodriguez died in a DUI wrong-way accident on the 15 Freeway near Aero Drive.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal multi-car accident happened on August 27 around 1:34 a.m. For DUI-related reasons, 25-year-old James A. Cox began driving northbound in the southbound lanes. Subsequently, he crashed his Infiniti QX 30 SUV into a Honda Fit head-on. From there, the Infiniti struck a Nissan Altima, driven by a 58-year-old woman who reported no injuries in the crash.
 
Moments later, San Diego firefighters arrived to extricate the driver and passenger from the damaged Honda. The driver, identified as 32-year-old Yannira Rodriguez of San Diego, passed away before being taken to a hospital. The single mother always put her daughter first, per a GoFundMe. Her 13-year-old daughter in the Honda suffered major injuries and required hospital care.
 
Authorities learned Rodriguez was on her way home with her daughter when the crash occurred.
 
Following an investigation, officers arrested Cox for gross vehicular manslaughter and DUI. By 9:40 a.m., Monday, authorities reopened the lanes and traffic resumed.
