Passenger Dies after U-Haul Truck Crashes into Tree and Catches Fire in Fowler

 
FOWLER, CA (April 28, 2021)Summer Eitel died in a fiery truck accident in Fowler Sunday, April 25.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened on Highway 99 south of Manning Avenue. A 40-year-old man was driving a U-Haul truck northbound when it he swerved off the right shoulder and into the gore point. The truck then crashed into the tree while in the gore point, smashing the engine compartment into the cab of the truck.
 
The truck caught on fire and officers were able to safely get the driver out of the truck.
 
The 39-year-old Carmichael resident, who was the right front passenger, was still trapped inside when the truck became fully engulfed in flames. Eitel died at the scene, according to the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.
 
Paramedics took the driver to Community Regional Medical Center with major injuries.
 
A CHP officer was treated for smoke inhalation.
 
Authorities are still trying to determine what caused the driver to lose control of the U-Haul. An investigation is ongoing.
