Stolen Van Involved in Fatal Accident on Ney Street in Oakland

 
OAKLAND, CA (March 9, 2022) – Police confirmed that a driver of a stolen van died in an accident in the 8400 block of Ney Street on March 2.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened shortly after 10:45 AM.
 
Based on a report, officers found a stolen van in the lanes. In an effort to avoid a pursuit, they put “stop strips” to puncture the tires in case the driver attempted to flee.
 
Subsequently, when officers tried to approach the vehicle, the driver drove off and the strips damaged its tired. Patrol cars did not follow the van. However, a police helicopter reported that it caught fire, before crashing into a home.
 
As a result, Oakland Police said the driver of the van died in the incident. Officials did not yet release the victim’s identity pending kin notification.
 
Police said that within the van were other accelerants that caused the fire. At this point, they don’t have additional information. Also, an investigation is still ongoing.
