Homeless Man Fatally Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver on Melrose Avenue in East Hollywood

EAST HOLLYWOOD, CA (May 11, 2021)Si Park died in a pedestrian hit-and-run crash Saturday in East Hollywood.

The crash happened around 5:20 a.m. on Melrose Avenue at Edgemont Street. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the 32-year-old homeless man was standing outside a crosswalk next to legally parked vehicles when a black compact sedan traveling at 20 to 25 mph struck him.

The impact caused Park to hit a parked vehicle, then the street, causing him major head injuries. He died at the scene. He was wearing a GPS ankle monitor linked to the Los Angeles County Probation Department.

Police said the involved driver fled the scene after the crash. Surveillance video showed the fleeing vehicle turning southbound from Melrose onto Vermont Avenue.

The car likely sustained major damage to the right front-end but the windshield may not have been broken due to the slower speed of impact. Black paint chips were found at the scene.

The suspect was not speeding and may have been trying to merge left at the time of the crash.

Police asked anyone with information to call the LAPD’s Central Traffic Division at 213-833-3746.

We extend our deepest condolences to the grieving family and friends of Si Park.
