Worker at Newark Plant Dies after Getting Trapped in Powder

 
NEWARK, CA (January 2, 2023) – Rodas Jerez died in a hopper accident at a Newark gypsum plant and distribution center Tuesday afternoon on December 27.
 
According to the Alameda County Fire Department, they received reports about a worker trapped in a four-story hopper at PABCO Gypsum at 37851 Cherry Street around 3:45 p.m.
 
Powder inside the hopper got hung up and Jerez went inside to assess the situation. A very large quantity fell on him and he was trapped in the powder.
 
Both co-workers and firefighters tried to pull him out unsuccessfully. Firefighters tried to rescue him from above and below where he was.
 
Firefighters eventually cut a hole in the hopper with a Petrogen torch and pulled him out. However, Jerez died at the scene. He was 25 years old from Burlingame.
 
Further investigation is underway.
