Traffic Delayed after Two Big Rigs Collide on 5 Freeway near Sperry Avenue

PATTERSON, CA (January 2, 2023) – A driver sustained injuries in a big rig accident on 5 Freeway, Friday evening.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened on December 30, at about 5:00 p.m. A big rig in the fast lane reportedly attempted to pass a big rig in the slow lane.

Then, the two big rigs collided near Sperry Avenue. The impact of the collision caused the big rig in the slow lane to travel in a northeast direction and go over a guardrail. The big rig also hit an embankment on a bridge over a dirt road.

As per reports, the driver of that big rig sustained minor injuries. However, it is unknown if the driver needed hospitalization.

Meanwhile, the other big rig driver did not suffer injuries.

The California Department of Transportation worked on replacing the guardrail for the whole day. Traffic was impacted until 5:00 p.m.

CHP continues to investigate the cause of the accident.

When driving larger vehicles, watch your speed and scan the road for possible hazards. Stay in your lane and drive defensively at all times. Also, make sure to perform regular maintenance and do proactive repairs to avoid accidents.
