Pedestrian Dies after Struck by Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy in Moreno Valley

 
MORENO VALLEY, CA (May 28, 2023) – Rafaela Salazar Ruiz died in a pedestrian accident in Moreno Valley early Thursday morning on May 25.
 
The fatal accident happened around 4:00 a.m. at Cactus Avenue and Heacock Street, roughly a block of March Air Reserve Base. According to the CHP, a Riverside County sheriff’s patrol deputy driving in the vicinity struck Ruiz who was walking on Cactus in an unmarked crosswalk.
 
The deputy was not operating his vehicle in an emergency response mode at the time of the crash, according to a sheriff’s statement.
 
Responding deputies immediately rendered aid to Ruiz. Paramedics arrived soon after and pronounced Ruiz dead at the scene.
 
Ruiz was a 27-year-old Moreno Valley resident.
 
Meanwhile, the involved deputy was not injured.
 
The CHP is handling the investigation under a long-standing sheriff’s policy that tasks the agency with overseeing independent evaluations whenever sheriff’s vehicles are involved in traffic-related incidents involving property damage, injuries or deaths.
