Police Arrest Leggett Man after Deadly Hit-and-Run Crash in Garberville

GARBERVILLE, CA (September 25, 2023) – A pedestrian was killed and Earl Castillo was arrested in a hit-and-run crash on Highway 101 in Garberville Wednesday afternoon on September 20.

The fatal crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on the west roadway edge of the highway, just south of the Richardson Grove State Park entrance. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 67-year-old man from Carmichael had come to a halt on the dirt shoulder, waiting for a family member.

Castillo, a 53-year-old Leggett resident, was driving a 2010 Black Toyota Tundra. As he approached from the southbound direction of the highway, he veered off the roadway and struck the pedestrian.

The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Meanwhile, Castillo drove away.

Arriving CHP personnel discovered vehicle parts that helped identify the involved vehicle. With the help of several Cal-Trans employees who kept a watchful eye, CHP officers located the Toyota and attempted to initiate an enforcement stop.

However, Castillo refused to yield to the patrol vehicle’s lights and sirens. He tried to escape up a private driveway but found himself blocked by a locked gate.

Officers eventually caught Castillo and arrested him for multiple charges, including DUI, hit and run, and other related offenses. They booked into the Humboldt County Jail.
