Patricia Vargas Killed, Miguel Hernandez Arrested in Madera Head-On Crash on Road 27
MADERA, CA (February 17, 2022) — One person died in a head-on accident on Road 27 at Avenue 17 on Wednesday, February 9.
The Madera County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 49-year-old Madera resident Patricia Vargas.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the head-on collision occurred on Road 27 around 6:15 p.m. A white Chrysler, driven by Miguel Hernandez, made a sudden left turned onto Avenue 17 in front of Vargas in the oncoming lane.
Vargas, driving a Nissan with her husband and daughter, reportedly attempted to avoid the Chrysler but sideswiped it. As a result, Vargas vehicle collided head-on with another oncoming truck.
Vargas died at the scene. The family started a GoFundMe to raise funeral expenses.
Emergency personnel stated Vargas’ child was seriously injured and needed to be airlifted to Valley Children’s hospital. Her husband, Ted Vargas, was also injured.
The occupant of the truck was not reported as being seriously injured.
Police arrested Hernandez. Soon after, he was booked into jail on multiple charges, including a DUI with three priors and murder.
