Police Arrest DUI Suspect after Crash in Bakersfield Killing 1 Passenger and Severely Injuring 1 Driver

 
BAKERSFIELD, CA (August 21, 2023) – A passenger died and Luis Esquivel was arrested in a DUI crash in central Bakersfield Thursday evening on August 17.
 
The fatal crash happened around 10:39 p.m. at California Avenue and Chester Avenue. According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the 48-year-old suspect was driving a pickup truck when he collided with a sedan carrying a woman and a man.
 
As a result of the crash, the male passenger in the sedan suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The female driver was in critical condition.
 
Esquivel was unharmed. He was later arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, DUI causing bodily injury and various vehicle codes violations.
