Mr. Cortez-Ruiz Suffers Major Injuries in Early Morning Rollover Crash in Visalia

 
VISALIA, CA (July 20, 2021) – Mr. Cortez-Ruiz sustained serious injuries in a rollover accident in Visalia Thursday, July 15.
 
The accident happened around 4:53 a.m. on Avenue 54 at Borchardt Drive. CHP officials said Mr. Cortez-Ruiz was a passenger in a vehicle. The driver, Ms. Hernandez-Mikely saw a light from a work truck parked on the roadway. Thinking the light was an oncoming vehicle, she swerved to avoid a crash. She swerved again, causing the car to overturn.
 
As a result, Cortez-Ruiz was ejected from the front passenger side window and hit the concrete roadway. He was not wearing his seat belt. Paramedics transported him to Kaweah Delta Medical Center with major injuries.
 
Another passenger had minor injuries but he was not taken to the hospital.
 
The crash is still under investigation. The California Highway Patrol says drugs and/or alcohol do not seem to be a factor.
